Situation

Tavannes is 15 km as the crow flies from Moutier and 10 km from Biel. Tavannes is the largest locality in the Tavannes valley, formerly called l'Orval. The town is located between the Tanne plateau, on the Montagne du Droit, Montoz to the south and the forest of Chaindon to the north. The source of the Birse is located to the southwest of the town, at the foot of Pierre-Pertuis. The river crosses the locality in an artificially underground bed. Municipality
